Film rationale and proposal

In this justification we will clarify the details that will help to aid us in the planning of our film. We want to create a mystery thriller that requires documentation and arranging, we will be designing an opening for a mystery thriller film which will require lots of thought, planning and skillful camerawork. On top of this we will clarify every possible thought and the last thought that we will transform into a finished film.

When we received the brief, we then specifically explored the thriller genre and subgenres. We picked out the conventions of each sub genre with our knowledge already about genres and by watching trailers. After picking conventions for each sub genre, we watched thriller openings from the movies Psycho,The Net and Panic Room. This allowed us to unravel the meanings hidden in the openings and to study the way it is laid out both in video and sound. When studying the openings, we went and studied it second by second and created a detailed deconstruction which allowed us to see what our thriller opening would benefit from and how the openings alone represented the genre.

Following a study to explore the interests of potential crowds we have presumed that a mystery thriller on the plot's rhythm as it could change over and again this should be possible to guarantee that crowds can be kept unsure about the movies course and the support of the activity. Our crucial research suggests that our target audience will be roughly between the ages of 15 to 17 years old. We comparatively found that in our google forms that the vast amount of gender are dominatingly male this shows we should focus on our item at a male crowd and ensure that we can add both genders opinion so that they  can enjoy the film and no gender feels that the other is more dominant.

Through our survey that we conducted, we found out that the majority of people enjoy a psychological thriller, with horror thrillers also being popular. This is important as the type of thriller film we will be creating is a mystery thriller which contains elements from both of these subgenres, which means that it might attract a wider range of audience making our film more appealing for a larger group of people. The survey also showed that 44% of the people who took part in the survey thought that suspense was the most important aspect to a thriller film. Suspense can be included in a variety of ways including the music build up, type of camera shots and and the overall pacing and plot of the film. The survey showed that people would mostly want to see an unknown hero as the main character with other popular choices being a victim and female villain. We have decided to have our main character be the victim as it could subvert expectations and get more people to enjoy having a victim as the main character rather than a hero.

Whilst conducting our research we can see that those who filled out the survey prefer a variety of different sub genre, which was extremely crucial for us as the producers as we can see what types of sub-genre would suit our target market and focus on what we need to do in the future to ensure that our sub genre is efficient as well as foreshadowing. When researching, we can see that when it comes to our mystery thriller, we can clearly see that the main colours which are suited to this sub-genre is black, grey and red, which implies a variety of emotions such as dull, dark, evil, suspense and can also create a feeling of loneliness, regardless we can see that the colour red can also produce a mixture of love, hate, anger, blood and much more.

As a group we came up with many distinctive ideas that would require both mystery thriller conventions and meet the needs of our target audience. One of these ideas was to set the mystery thriller in the modern world and have our main antagonist first seen at the beginning of the film and they want to kill anyone in their site. The protagonist tries to solve the mystery of who killed his friend. We learnt that the main colours used in mystery thrillers so we will be using red, black and grey a lot within our film. The antagonist will be dressed in all black to give him a distinctive look where the audience won’t be able to see their face. We could appeal to younger audiences through a relevant and intriguing soundtrack involving many songs that could contradict action or that could build tension.

Overall the final idea for our film is that it will focus on having the victim as the main character in an attempt to subvert the audiences expectations, and will focus on him attempting to, in a way, solve a type of murder mystery. It will be a mystery thriller set in the 21st century and will follow the main character being led into shaded woods by the killer, the same woods in which we previously see a murder in the opening of the film. The film will aim to focus on the mystery of the film as we never see who the killer is, if he really killed in the opening and if our main character will survive. We have chosen to do this as the subgenres and themes we have chosen aren’t necessarily the most popular but will still be interesting enough for the audience to stay interested throughout.
